Project background

SNV is implementing Sustainable Energy for Smallholder Farmers (SEFFA), a multi-country project that supports scalable, innovative business cases using renewable energy services and technologies to improve production and livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the dairy and horticultural value chains in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. SEFFA is an EnDev project co-financed by IKEA Foundation with the project duration of three years (Jan 2021 – Dec 2023) that follows a market-based approach and demonstrates the feasibility of productive use of renewable energy.

The SEFFA project takes a market-based approach and aims at increasing the availability of PUE technologies and services as well as demonstrating the economic rationale of such investments for smallholder farmers.

Purpose of the job

The purpose of this role is to seek the services of a university graduate or student, to support the SEFFA Ethiopia team in energy engineering for Standardisation of SWP installation and to monitor solar dryer technology piloting. This post is particularly for young graduates or student seeking to build their experience in the development space. It is therefore both a learning and a value adding relationship. The intern is expected to take advantage of the space provided to enrich their experience and develop themselves while providing quality service to the SEFFA project at SNV Ethiopia.

Roles and Responsibilities

Standardisation of SWP installation as per the demonstration 

  • Support the team in observing how the demonstration has been set up to develop standard installation procedure, design technical sheet to be referred for SWP set up which consists of Panel support structure, Fencing, Control panel and other set up.
  • Support the team in documenting the Dos and Don’t of SWP installation.
  • Supporting the team in reviewing technical manuals of user (farmer) friendly: one page user reference

Monitoring of solar dryer technology piloting 

  • Support the team in capturing progress, lesson and status of the different dryer being piloted.

Assume any other responsibilities relevant to the position as assigned by the Project manager.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, (Mechanical engineering, Energy Technology, or related field).  Newly undergraduate or enrolled in last year of undergraduate, Master graduated or enrolled in master’s program but finished course work and remain with doing their thesis work.
  • Proficient and demonstratable computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office apps, Solid work and other drawing/design apps.
  • Knowledge on basic drawing, exporting drawing to other formats and able to work with sheet sets.
  • Knowledge and experience on designing solar energy technologies such as solar water pumps and dryer technologies.
  • Sound cross-cultural, interpersonal, and networking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Able to make new and useful ideas work.
  • Able to always exercise discretion when dealing with confidential issues.

Contract Type: National

Expected start date: As soon as possible

Duty Station:  Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Contract Duration: Four months with the possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability.
